Celluloid and printed prose

Julian Vance builds interconnected narrative worlds through 35mm photochemical film and hardbound prose. Based between coastal Maine and New York, his work examines isolation, tactile history, and human consequence.

Artistic Path

Dual disciplines, single focus

The work began behind an Arriflex 16SR2 on coastal docks, capturing cold-water trades and vanishing regional dialects. Early short films prioritized atmospheric tension and physical celluloid texture over commercial dialogue.

When character internalities exceeded the runtime of short-format cinema, manuscript drafts became independent books. Now, each feature film and published novel shares identical research dossiers, locations, and thematic weight.

Core Philosophy

Stories demand tactile weight

Celluloid grain resists algorithmic compression, just as Smyth-sewn cloth bindings outlive ephemeral digital feeds. Narrative tension earns its power when committed to permanent physical mediums.
